East African sex workers speak candidly about their personal histories and daily challenges in When I Dare to Be Powerful, a compelling narrative released by Akina Mama wa Afrika, an Open Society Foundations grantee. The narrative highlights five women’s stories as part of an oral history project that encourages women to speak out about their experiences.
When I Dare to Be Powerful presents the multiple dimensions of these women’s lives. It focuses on their relationships with loved ones, as well as on their health, spirituality, and personal experiences with sex work.
Akina Mama wa Afrika is a Pan-African nongovernmental organization established to advance the women’s rights movement in Africa and foster the development of civil society leaders. The Open Society Foundations supports Akina Mama's work to provide training and technical assistance to the East African sex worker movement, and influence other women’s rights organizations to adopt a rights-based approach to sex workers and sex work-related projects.
The narrative is available online on the Akina Mama website.
