On August 31, a diverse group of U.S. nongovernmental organizations released a statement of principles for the 10th anniversary of September 11.
More than 70 groups, including the Open Society Foundations, signed the statement encouraging tolerance and respectful public discourse on issues of security. The joint statement called for a solemn remembrance of the 9/11 victims, while also promoting inclusion and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. The signatories included a wide range of racial, ethnic, religious, and civil and human groups in the United States.
In the decade since the September 11th attacks, concern has grown over counterterrorism measures that have not adhered to Constitutional protections or human rights standards. The statement calls on political leaders and public officials to provide positive leadership to ensure the safety and security of every person in the United States while preserving freedom and human dignity.
